BAND THE SWELL FELLAS
ALBUM The Great Play of Extension
OUR RATING 80/100
Hailing from Ocean City, Maryland, THE SWELL FELLAS, after the release of their debut full length 'The Big Grand Entrance' in January, were out with a new EP, entitled, “The Great Play of Extension' just a few months later.
The power trio consists of two brothers, Conner and Chris Poole (guitar and drums respectively) with their longtime friend, Mark Rohrer, a rock guitarist who they begged to buy bass gear.
With larger than life lyrics inspired by the ebbs and flows of their personal lives, they remain surprisingly grounded for a band who are so prone to interstellar exploration.
Furthering their sound, the trio linked up with mixing/recording mastermind Ben McLeod of All Them Witches on the album and EP to breathe life into their compositions and create a truly unique sonic experience.
Almost 30 mins for three songs; the first one is PLACEBO, a long jam, with a 70’s twist, psych atmospheres, a song in continuous evolution with a complex texture.
A sharp riff and dreamin’ vocals to open ACID TONE, while SCATTERBRAIN hit us with its prog/psych mood, every moment full of surprises..a long journey which is enjoyable to handle.
SURELY INTERESTING..A BAND TO KEEP AN EYE ON!
