OUR RATING 80/100
International metal collective THŪN featuring Jon Higgs (guitar/vocals) and Hugo Wilkinson (bass) of MONSTERWORKS alongside James Knoerl (drums, GARGOYL) released its debut self-titled album via Eat Lead and Die Music on June 16th, 2021.
Lead guitar on the album was wrestled into submission by Karl Sanders of NILE.
The style of this new project can be described as a smart blend of epic death metal, doom, with some SABBATH and PRIEST influences.
The narrative concept is closer to BULL ELEPHANT, an entity also part of the greater Eat Lead and Die Music collective.
THŪN draws from the same loosely Lovecraftian mythos, set in modern day or near future.
The antagonists are every corporation or person that puts profit before preservation of the natural world.
The first shot is the title-track, almost nine minutes, where death vocals enrich a carpet sound where above mentioned influences live together in harmony, helped by interesting tempo changes.
After CAGE WITHIN A CAGE, a two-minutes interlude, sweetened by a fancy arpeggio, INTERTWINED COLLECTIVE FATE starts with seventies influences evolving subsequently and exploding in a fast solo.
They go on with RIGHTEOUS VIOLENCE, that pick up the pace and groove in the last slice, followed by another interlude, which opens GAIACIDE, over nine minutes, where death, Priest and Venom influences create a perfect mix that ends in the best way this great work.
